Class 3A Girls Quarterfinal Recaps

JEFFERSON COUNTY NORTH 57, FRONTENAC 39

Jefferson County North held Frontenac without a field goal in the third quarter to power second-seed Chargers to a 57-39 quartefinal victory in the first game of the day.

Jefferson County North outscored Frontenac 14-2 in the third quarter, holding the Raiders to 0 of 6 shooting in the quarter. JCN was just 4 of 11 in the third qurater, but the Chargers forced 27 turnovers that led to 20 points.

Sophomore Jordan Kramer scored 20 points to go with four rebounds, three steals, two assists and a blocked shot to lead Jefferson County North (23-1), which will play Marion in Friday's semifinals. Kate Brickell and Katie Noll had 10 points each.

JCN shot 19 of 61 (31.1 percent), including 5 of 20 from 3-point range and 14 of 24 from the foul line, but turned the ball over only 12 times.

Senior Emily Barto had a double-double in her final game for Frontenac (17-7) with 13 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks.

Frontenac shot 32.5 percent (13 of 40) and was 5 of 13 from 3-point range and 8 of 14 from the foul line.

MARION 49, BELOIT 44

Julia Zeiner had 17 points and eight rebounds to lead sixth-seeded Marion to a 49-44 quarterfinal victory over third-seeded Beloit in Game 2.

A 12-1 run in the second quarter powered Marion (19-5) to a 12-point lead. Beloit (18-6) whittled the lead down to 25-24 with 4:59 to go in the third quarter and the Trojans had the game to one possession five times in the fourth quarter, but the Warriors never relinquished the lead.

Lindsay Hett also scored in double figuers for Marion, which will play Jefferson County North in Friday's 3 p.m. semifinal, with 12 points and eight rebounds. The Warriors were 18 of 41 shooting (43.9 percent), including 2 of 13 from 3-point range and 11 of 18 from the foul line. Marion had just 14 turnovers and held a slight 38-27 rebounding advantage.

Emily Pahls had 12 points and nine rebounds to lead Beloit. Cami Engelbert had 12 points and eight rebounds.

Marion's defense clamped down on Beloit, which shot a frigid 26.3 percent (15 of 57) and just 1 of 13 from 3-point range.

HAYS TMP 57, RILEY COUNTY 47

Top-seeded Hays Thomas More Prep survived a close call as eighth-seeded and 3A tourney veteran Riley County pushed the Monarchs in a 57-47 quarterfinal victory.

Riley County shot 50 percent in the first half and built a 25-21 halftime lead over TMP (23-1). The Monarchs, who shot just 36 percent in the first half, improved to 47.4 percent in the second half and outscored Riley County (13-11) 36-22 in the final two quarters.

TMP will play Garden Plain in the 6:30 p.m. semifinal on Friday night.

Rachel Jacobs was 7 of 12 shooting and led TMP with 20 points, four rebounds and four steals. Kaylee Hoffman had 14 points and five rebounds. Sophia Schippers had 11 points.

TMP shot 18 of 44 for the game (40.9 percent), 7 of 19 from 3-point range and 14 of 19 from the free-throw line. The Monarchs had just four turnovers.

Kelly Thompson scored 19 points and had six rebounds to lead Riley County, making its 10th 3A Tournament appearance since 1995. Rachel Rheaume had 11 points. The Falcons were 14 of 30 (46.7 percent) overall, 7 of 13 from 3-point range and 12 of 16 from the foul line. Riley County had 13 turnovers.

GARDEN PLAIN 55, HILLSBORO 47

Garden Plain scored the first 12 points of the game and then had to hold off Hillsboro in a 55-47 quarterfinal victory in the final game of the night.

Fourth-seeded Garden Plain will take on Hays TMP in Friday's semifianls.

Garden Plain (19-5) shot 66.7 percent (14 of 21) in building a 34-23 halftime lead. The Owls struggled in the second half shooting just 5 of 20 (25 percent). Garden Plain scored just five third-quarter points, going 1 of 9 in the quarter.

Two Tena Loewen free throws tied the game at 41-all with 5:43 to play in the fourth quarter. Buckets by Nicole Dooley and Ann Pauly and two Samantha Ledy gave Garden Plain a 47-41 lead with 2:56 left. The closest Hillsboro (18-6) got after that was four points.

Camille Huebert scored a game-high 12 points to lead Garden Plain. Lede had 10 points and seven rebounds.. Jordan Hoheisel and Pauly added nine each. The Owls shot 46.3 percent (19 of 41) overall, just 2 of 7 from long range and was 15 of 19 from the foul line.

Dakota Kaufman had 11 points and six rebounds to lead Hillsboro. Loewen and Candace Weinbrenner had 10 points each.
