Class 3A Championship/Consolation Recaps
CHAMPIONSHIP - HAYS TMP 56, MARION 45
After building an eight-point lead late in the second quarter, Hays Thomas More Prep kept fighting back Marion in Saturday's Girls Class 3A Championship Game.
On three occasions early in the fourth quarter, the Monarchs' lead was down to one. Then back-to-back 3-pointers by Jenna Lang and Sophia Schippers finally put Marion away.
TMP won its first girls state basketball championship with a 56-45 victory over the Warriors, outscoring Marion 21-12 in the fourth quarter.
Whitney Gordon's putback with 3:45 to play pulled Marion (20-6) within one at 41-40 with 3:45 to play. Lang then buried her trey with 2:49 to go to push the TMP lead back to 44-40. Julia Zeiner's jumper with 2:23 to go pulled Marion to 44-42, but on TMP's next possession, Schippers was left wide open for a 3-pointer from the left wing to give the Monarchs a 47-42 lead with 2:12 to play.
TMP then hit 9 of 10 free throws down the stretch to clinch the state title.
Rachel Jacobs scored 18 points to lead the Monarchs (25-1). Jacobs also had seven rebounds. Jessa Stramel had 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Schippers finished with eight points as did Kaylee Hoffman, who had a game-high 10 rebounds.
TMP shot 17 of 50 (34.0 percent), 6 of 20 from 3-point range and 16 of 21 from the free-throw line.
Marion was led by Zeiner, who had 12 points and six rebounds. Kayley Heerey had 11 points and seven boards. Lindsay Hett scored 10 points with five rebounds.
The Warriors shot 17 of 49 overall (34.7 percent), 5 of 24 from 3-point range and 6 of 10 from the free-throw line.
CONSOLATION - GARDEN PLAIN 61, JEFFERSON COUNTY NORTH 46
Samantha Ledy was nearly perfect shooting in leading Garden Plain to a 61-46 victory over Jefferson County North in the 3A girls consolation game on Saturday.
Ledy was 7 of 8 from the floor and 7 of 9 from the free-throw line to lead the Owls. Ledy had a solid all-around game witih eight rebounds, two assits and a steal.
Camille Huebert finished withi 15 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Ann Pauly and Nicole Dooley had seven points.
The Owls (20-6) shot 43.2 percent overall (19 of 44), 4 of 15 from 3-point range and 19 of 29 from the foul line.
Kate Brickell and Mallory GrandPre led Jefferson County North with 11 points each. GrandPre had a double-double with 11 rebounds. Jordan Kramer, the Chargers' leading scorer through two tournament games, had eight points.
The Chargers (23-3) shot 32 percent from the floor (16 of 50), 3 of 19 from 3-point range and 11 of 19 from the free-throw line.
Garden Plain jumped out to a 13-6 lead after one quarter and led 29-15 at halftime.
