Class 3A Boys Championship and Consolation
CHAMPIONSHIP - WICHITA COLLEGIATE 72, MINNEAPOLIS 32
Top-seeded Wichita Collegiate completed back-to-back state title runs with a decisive 72-32 victory over Minneapolis in the Class 3A boys state title game on Saturday night.
Collegiate (25-1) raced out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back, leading 25-5 after one quarter and 41-16 at halftime.
The Spartans knocked down 10 of 26 3-point field goals. Blake Jablonski hit 4 of 14 from long range, while Bryce Cornejo had three treys. Collegiate shot 49.1 percent overall (28 of 57), while Minneapolis (21-5) was just 9 of 34 (26.5 percent). The Lions came into Saturday's championship game shooting 61 percent in their first two state contests.
Cornejo led all scorers with 15 points. Jablonski had 12 points and Brett LeMaster finished with 10 points. The Spartans had 19 assists (Corjeno led with 6) on 28 made baskets.
Casy Arganbright scored eight points to lead Minneapolis. Keegan McGullick had seven.
CONSOLATION - ROSSVILLE 63, KANSAS CITY CHRISTIAN 58
Matthew Buhler scored 25 points and Tanner Cady had a double-double as Rossville had to continually hold off Kansas City Christian charges to win the Class 3A Boys Consolation Game 63-58.
The Bulldogs (21-5) led 37-30 with 4:35 to go in the third quarter. Rossville couldn't put Kansas City Christian (18-8) away, though.
KCC pulled within 60-58 with 33 seconds left on a Blake Spencer hoop and then had a chance to get the final shot of the game and either tie or win after forceing a Rossville turnover. KCC was assesed a technical foul for calling a timeout when the Panthers had already ran out with four seconds remaining in the game. Buhler hit the first and missed the second. Buhler was then fouled on the inbound and sank a pair of free throws for the winning margin.
Buhler was 8 of 25 shooting and had eight rebounds for Rossville. Cady had 16 points, 10 rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals for the Bulldogs.
Rossville shot 36.2 percent (21 of 58), including 3 of 9 from the 3-point line and 18 of 25 from teh free-throw line.
Garvin Haughey had 24 points on 9 of 17 shooting and nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals for KCC. Jordan Mehalic had 15 points and eight rebounds.
