LADY DRAGONS COME UP
SHORT IN OPENING ROUND
AT NATIONALS

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – Hillsborough’s Aida Bauza was a one-person wrecking crew on Thursday in the opening round of the 2009 NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championship and the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team had no answers to stop her.

Bauza had a tournament-high 23 kills on .500 hitting as the ninth-seeded Hawks ended the eight-seeded Lady Dragons’ national championship hopes with a 3-0 opening-round victory at the Mid-America Center.

“We didn’t show up to play,” stunned Lady Dragon sophomore Carol Logato said after 13th-ranked HCC’s 25-21, 25-17, 25-18 loss to the Hawks. “I don’t know what happened.”

Two things that happened to the Lady Dragons (30-9) were that they committed 31 attack errors, the second-most this season, and they were out-blocked 13-6 by the Hawks. Hillsborough out-hit Hutchinson .278-.041.

The Lady Dragons, who fell in the opening round at nationals for the second-straight season, will play 16th-seed Spartanburg Methodist College at Noon on Friday in an elimination match. Hutchinson must win two matches on Friday to advance to the Saturday placement matches for the fifth-straight time.
